Capturing light

Greatly influenced by her spiritual connection to the historic region of Najd, Malluh has witnessed the growing changes in her beloved country over the recent decades with an observant eye, and a heavy heart. She has focused on the use of objects in her work as a means of portraying these changes and the resulting confrontation between modernity and cultural heritage.
She initially employed collage as a means of expression utilizing old objects. ‘Capturing Light’ is a statement for the youth who have been swept up in the tidal wave of consumerist culture that has flooded the country in such a short period of time. The artist uses her personal objects in the photograms to tell the story of the little things in life that are priceless and that which give us joy:
Memorabilia that will give us comfort as we get older is transformed from what was once trivial; it may become powerful again.
I find my inspiration during the frequent trips to white-walled hospitals with my mother and my kids, and in the small objects around the house like the X-ray of my daughter’s broken finger, the stethoscope that I use to check my mother’s blood pressure, my son’s retainer, my husband’s pill splitter…” – Maha Malluh
